Pain free ?

A doctor recommended me the book "Pain free. A revolutionary method for stopping chronic pain". It arrived by snailmail on Friday, and yesterday morning I spent the first hours in bed reading the first chapters. This american author thinks that all pain can be cured through physical exercises, not surgically.

So - he promises me that the pain should subsides after a week of doing five exercises for 20 minutes every morning.

I can´t say anything that I am willing to do the exercises, and would be very happy if they would work. I have done some similar exercises earlier, which had no special effect, but maybe these are exactly the ones I need.

In the first exercise I sit on the edge of a chair and squeeze a pillow between my knees (three sets of fifteen). Then I lay down on my back with my feet up on the chair and do the pillow squeeze. In the third exercise I lay down with my forehead on the floor and my arms resting in the "don´t shoot, I give up"-position. This position should be held for six minutes.

The fourth exercise is a static extension, where I kneel with my hands on the floor under the shoulders. The back should sway and my hips should be in front of the knees. This position should be held for one minute.

In the last exercise I sit down against a wall with my shoulders and head against the wall for a minute.

I let you know if this really is a revolutionary method...!

Hi Camilla,

Those exercises sound reasonable. I think they make us use our bodies in ways we are not used to. Over time, since we tend to do the same things over and over, our bodies become out of balance. Once this happens, chronic pain starts to set in.

It should be interesting to see if it works for you. I think if you do the exercises just like you are supposed to, and actually "believe in them", you may be pleasantly surprised with the results.

I hope your back gets better soon. And good luck with your surgery...if and when that happens!

I agree with Justin, will be interesting to see if it works, and I hope it does. I am in the 6th week of a horrible left shin splint, and it is finally starting to subside in swelling and pain. If you get a chance, please visit my running web site, Faithful Soles. I have a categorized and searchable Running Blog Database on there and would appreciate it if you would link your blog to it. I think you would get a lot of moral support from the members on the site who read your blog, both for your back and for your running.

Thank you for your support, both of you.

This is really a test for my patience, and in keeping my hope high.

I am happy for my optimistic nature, although I have a few black holes now and then.

Your Faithful Soles-project sounds really great. Good luck with that, and your own pain. I have linked my page to your database, and maybe one day I´ll join you as a member.
